Budget: Budget Rent a Car System, Inc. was begun in 1958. The founder, Morris Mirkin, opened it in Los Angeles, California; Julius Lederer became a partner a year later. The original goal was to be as budget friendly as possible by renting cars more cheaply than competitors, hence the name. The first location only had 10 cars; though by 1960, the headquarters were moved to Chicago, Illinois by a relative of Mirkin, who Mirkin had asked for help. The company began franchising the business soon after the move.
Budget offers rental cars at a budget price, but it also offers moving trucks and equipment, as well as supplies for moving. The company has free pickup for customers at some locations. Budget has about 2,700 sites around the world in over 150 countries. It has locations in major cities across the United States, from Honolulu to Baltimore, New York City to Los Angeles, and everything in between, such as Phoenix to Oklahoma City. Other major locations in North America include, but are certainly not limited to, Mexico City, Mexico, Tijuana, Mexico, Vancouver, Canada, Toronto, Canada, and Montreal, Canada. Around the world, you’ll find Budget locations in places like Belize City, Belize, Berlin, Germany, Tokyo, Japan, Auckland, New Zealand, Stockholm, Sweden, Istanbul, Turkey, and Kiev, Ukraine, just to name a few.
Budget has also been owned by Gibbons, Green, and van Amerongen, Ltd., Team Rental Group, and Cendant Corporation. Budget Group (as it was called under Team Rental Group) is currently under Avis Budget Group, one of the four companies that Cendant Corporation became. The Budget headquarters were moved to Lisle, Illinois in 1992, but Budget is currently headquartered in Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey with Avis. Though the majority of Budget sites are company-owned, about 25% of U.S. locations are licensed out.
