Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ), also known as Connellan Airport, is situated three and a half miles (6 km) from Ayers Rock Resort in the Northern Territory of Central Australia. While this little town is small and remote, the closest large town of Alice Springs can be found within a five-hour drive.

The airport provides the ideal gateway into the Red Center region with its fascinating 20,000 year old Aboriginal culture. Located close by Yulara, Uluru and Ayers Rock itself, it’s much easier to rent a car to explore - you’ll find well-maintained sealed roads between these popular places. Many find it simpler to take advantage of the car hire companies available at the airport itself so they can get on their way immediately after they land.

  Getting around

Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) is the fastest route for getting to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayers Rock. From here, it’s just a 20 minute drive to the natural landmark in Uluru. Some prefer to fly into Alice Springs Airport and drive to Ayers Rock from there, but as it is located 288 miles (463 km) away, it will take you the better part of five hours to drive there on a well sealed highway across the desert.

Ayers Rock Resort where you’ll likely be staying is just a 10-minute drive from the airport. Other attractions include Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park just a 30-minute drive away and the Walpa Gorge with its great hiking opportunities within a 45-minute drive. On a day trip, you could visit Watarrka National Park with its famous King Canyon, located three hours’ from Uluru.

You’ll find a choice of three car rental companies in the baggage claim area at Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ): Avis, Hertz and Thrifty. Each of these car hire companies includes airport pick up and drop off locations at both the airport and Ayers Rock Resort itself.

The range of vehicles varies from small and medium-sized sedans, to four wheel drive vehicles and SUVs for rockier terrain. If you’re travelling with family or a group, there are people carriers (minivans) available for more seating more people.

Please note that as the demand for hire cars is high, and the pool of cars is relative to large city airports, somewhat small, it is strongly advised that you book as far in advance as possible in order to get the right car at the right price.
