About Lufthansa (LH)

One of the founding members of the Star Alliance, Lufthansa (LH) is Germany’s leading airline, and in partnership with its subsidiaries, the busiest European carrier in terms of passenger traffic. From its main hub at Frankfurt Airport, Lufthansa operates flights to 18 domestic destinations and 193 regional and international destinations in 81 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. In addition to Lufthansa-branded carriers, the airline owns subsidiary carriers Austrian Airlines, Brussels, Airlines, Eurowings, and Swiss International Air Lines. The Lufthansa Group’s fleet of more than 700 aircraft is among the largest fleets worldwide.

  Popular Destinations

Lufthansa is truly a global airline, with the majority of its most popular destinations found in Asia and the Americas. Statistically speaking, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong are the airline’s top cities. Moving down the list, Sao Paulo, Chicago, Seoul, New York, and Mexico City round out the Top 10. Meanwhile, Dubai and Bangalore are popular with business travelers, while long-haul routes to Auckland and Sydney have struck a chord with globe-trotting tourists.

  Choosing your car

You could get a better deal on a Lufthansa car rental when you team up with Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, and Thrifty — and we can help. Check out the ways we can make a cheap car rental even cheaper. But first, consider your vehicle types. Of course, selection will vary by location, but you’ll generally find compact and economy sedans, standard through fullsize 4-door sedans, estate wagons, 7-12 seater minivans, and all-wheel drive SUVs.

Tips for Lufthansa Passengers Renting Cars

The minimum age to rent a car is location specific, but across the board, drivers under 25 years old will pay extra and have a slim range of vehicles to choose from.

Not reading the terms and conditions of your Lufthansa car rental could be the costliest decision of your trip. You’ll find all sorts of exclusions, restrictions, and requirements in the fine print. More importantly, you can save money by being informed.

The person who booked the car hire must be the person who picks up the car, and the credit card used must match the name and details of the primary driver. Note that some locations will accept debit cards as payment, but cash is generally not accepted for any aspect of the rental agreement.

Most vehicles are equipped with offline GPS, and you’ll typically be charged a daily fee to use the online service. If your mobile wireless data plan includes international roaming, you could save money by using your mobile device as a navigational device. Now, keep in mind that hands-free use is allowed in most countries. But there’s no guarantee that your car hire will be equipped with a cell phone holder — you may need to rent one from the vendor.

Lufthansa car rentals include Collision/Loss Damage Waivers (CDW/LDW), but in some cases, particularly in the U.S., you will need third-party liability insurance to rent a car. You could purchase this coverage from the vendor, or supply your own. In fact, most major credit cards offer automatic coverage whenever you use their card to rent a car. Check with your card issuer to save on additional expenses and duplicate coverage.

Most car rental companies give you a 29-minute grace period to return the car without incurring an extra day. Arriving more than 90 minutes late can add up to three extra days to your bill.
