About Mozambique (MZ)

Mozambique is a southeastern African country bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east and several other countries.  Its long narrow shape ensures an extended palm-fringed coastline with beautiful bays and exotic off-shore islands.

Discovering the best attractions is not always easy, but it is definitely rewarding. We recommend that you rent a car in Mozambique to experience the best of the daytrips. Maputo, as the bustling capital of the country, is worth a visit. It is an eclectic mix of old and new, with some Portuguese relics still visible. The most southerly town, Ponto D’Ouro is well-known for its reef diving and attracts divers from all over the world. North of Maputo is the beautiful Lake Bilene and the villages of Xai Xai and Tofo. All worth the effort to get there.

  Getting around

Due to a collapse in the currency, Mozambique has become a very cheap destination, but it also means there is often not enough money for basic commodities. Road signs are mostly in English, but it could also be completely absent, so using a good GPS is necessary. Set it to follow only main roads, as going off-road is not advisable unless you are experienced.  Be mindful of the distances and lack of fuel and other supplies in some villages.

The main road leading from South to North, the M1, is in reasonably good condition but parts of it can get damaged in tropical cyclones. So best to enquire from the Mozambique tourism office as to the state of the road.

  Choosing your car

A car rental in Mozambique is by far the best way to explore this country, as public transport is not up to standard. Most of the major Mozambique car hire brands like Budget, Hertz, Avis and Thrifty can be booked online through our booking portal.  Our portal can be accessed 24/7 regardless of your location and device.

Although there is no major tourist season other than in December, it is better to book your vehicle in advance to ensure a cheap car rental.  Besides the selection of vehicles such as compact, SUV, 4x4 or even minivan, there are many optional extras to choose from and additional insurance is recommended.

Tips and advice for renting a car in Mozambique

1

Driving in Maputo can be chaotic and traffic lights don’t always work, so be extra vigilant.

2

Parking in Mozambique is generally unregulated, but you might find restrictions in Maputo.

3

Police still try to bribe tourists by citing traffic violations. As long as you have done nothing wrong, you have the right to refuse and make sure to ask for an official receipt.  This should put them off.

4

Due to the condition of the roads, poor driving and vehicle standards, traffic accidents are common. Beware of pedestrians crossing the roads at unmarked areas.

5

During the rainy season between November and April, the coastal areas are at risk of tropical cyclones. January is normally the worst, with widespread flooding around river basins, especially the Zambezi.

6

Never hand over your passport or driver’s license if stopped at one of the many roadblocks. Just showing it is sufficient.
