Singapore Driving Ideas Guide
Situated in South East Asia, the island of Singapore is a thoroughly modern city filled with a mix of cultures, including Chinese, Malaysian and Indian. The city (and island of the same name) is one of the top tourist attractions in the region.
Singapore is a shopper's haven, while for lovers of various Asian cuisines, the city has it all. Other popular attractions include beautiful beaches, historical buildings, museums as well as numerous parks and gardens.
Singapore is a perfect base to not only explore the rest of the island by rental car especially as travelling distances are fairly short. Perhaps for the more adventurous, a trip into Malaysia would also be worth exploring. The countries are in fact connected by two land bridges namely the Causeway and Second Link.
Singapore to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
30 mins (20 km) (12 miles) via SLE or Mandai Road
Situated in the district of Kranji, the area around the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is fairly rural and a massive change from the hustle and bustle of the city itself. For lovers of wildlife, the trip is a must.
The reserve is filled with a large number of different animal and bird species and includes herons, various migratory birds from Asia, massive monitor lizards, snakes, otters but to name a few. There are many farms in the Kranji district as well which produce exotic fruits including jackfruit. Some of these offer guided tours.
Other attractions in the area include beautiful beaches, hiking trails and camp sites.
Singapore to Johor Bahru, Malaysia
50 mins (25 km) (15 miles) via SLE or BKE
A quick trip into Malaysia to visit the popular town of Johor Bahru is well worth considering. “JB” as most Singaporeans call it, has some spectacular shopping opportunities but also many other attractions, with something for everyone.
Perhaps its most popular attraction is Legoland Malaysia, a great place to take the kids.
Many cultural sites can be found in the town including Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, the Chinese Heritage Museum, Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple and the Kuso Trick Art Gallery.
Accommodation options in Johor Bahru include hotels, backpackers’ lodges and resorts.
Singapore to Malacca, Malaysia
3 hours 10 min (238 km) (310 miles) via AH2
Malacca is an extremely popular destination in Malaysia and well worth the approximately three-hour road trip. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has both a modern appeal while losing none of its Malaysian heritage.
Attractions in Malacca include the beautiful botanical gardens, historical buildings such as Stadthuys and St Paul’s Church, museums including the Maritime Museum and the Sultanate Palace as well as the Dutch Heritage Trail, which tracks Dutch influence on the region.
Be sure to spend some time in Jonker Street. This popular thoroughfare is filled with cultural attractions, great shopping opportunities, curio and souvenir shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs!
