New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the third busiest airport serving the New York City metropolitan area, offering regional flights in the U.S. and limited service to Canada and the Caribbean. (LGA)’s consolidated airport car rental center is home to a wide range of well-known brands such as Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, and National, with a massive selection of vehicles to choose from.
Here’s a quick snapshot of getting around in New York City. (LGA) is located roughly 4 miles (6.4 km) from Central Park in Manhattan; however, it’s approximately 9 driving miles (14.4 km), following the most popular and efficient route. That’s if you get it right. All road signs between these two points are very clearly marked, but it’s very possible for first-time visitors get to confused at the Randall Island interchange and find themselves in Harlem.
This is big city driving in the biggest city in America, and it doesn’t get any more intense than traversing the streets of New York. If you’re up for the challenge of navigating very tight spaces in major metropolitan traffic — with thousands of pedestrians coming and going in all directions — expect a certain amount of adrenaline to be coursing through your veins as you grip the wheel of your car hire. Obviously, loads of people drive in New York on a daily basis. However, it’s not advisable for first-time or inexperienced drivers to get behind the wheel in New York City — at least, without GPS.
Choosing your car
When choosing your car for a visit to New York, it’s critical that you consider your travel itinerary. Take a minute to ask yourself, am I going to be mainly driving in Manhattan? If so, a compact Toyota is optimal for the cramped traffic and parking conditions of the city. And continue the train of thought. Will you be traveling alone or with a small group? An intermediate Chevrolet is a surprisingly roomy yet space-efficient vehicle. Likewise, will you be chauffer of a larger group? The Volkswagen 7-9 seater minivan is designed for carry people around tight corners.
Tips and advice
Passengers arriving to (LGA) should follow signs to Terminal Shuttle buses that will take you to the consolidated car rental center.
When returning your car to (LGA), you’ll be directed to the Marine Air Terminal, which is accessed from the Grand Central Parkway, Exit 5.
In ideal traffic conditions, it should be a 30-minute trip from the airport to Midtown Manhattan. In rush hour — triple that travel time.
Parking, parking, parking. Prepare yourself for another big city experience in Manhattan. Be very wary of parking lots offering special all-day prices. Look for the small print on the sign, which usually says “up to ½ hour”. Meanwhile, some parking lots accept credit cards while others are strictly cash only.
Pay extra special attention to street signs. Double that if you’re planning to engage in metered street parking. If you come across a wide-open space anywhere on 5th Avenue, take a very good look around for posted parking regulations. There’s usually a very good reason that spot is open.
If you should experience a breakdown, stay with your vehicle unless it’s blocking traffic and you can’t move it out of the way, and then, turn on the hazard lights, get yourself to the roadside, and wait for roadside assistance. Do not wander away from the vehicle to seek help. It will come to you.
